After independence, new boundaries were demarcated in the country. This created several districts in western, Nyanza and many other provinces.

Before independence (1963), they were administered as central Nyanza (Busia), North Nyanza (Kakamega), Elgon Nyanza (Bungoma), Central Nyanza (Kisumu and Siaya), South Nyanza etc
